Healthy Eating

Part of your responsibility as a parent is to ensure that your family has the best diet for their health and well-being, and to teach your children how to lead healthy lives now and when they are adults.

Your family's diet should be based on organic whole foods -- foods in their most natural, unaltered forms with no pesticides or chemicals used in their growing.  These are  foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables, brown rice, whole grains, nuts and beans, foods unprocessed and free of chemicals.

The term "organic" refers specifically to how something is grown or produced.  Organic farmers do not use chemical pesticides or fertilizers, and their crops are minimally processed to maintain product integrity without using artificial ingredients, preservatives or irradiation.  Organic meat and dairy products come from animals that are fed only organic grain and are not given antibiotics, hormones or supplemental medications.  Synthetic chemicals for increasing shelf life are not added to organic foods.

Fruits and vegetables grown without synthetic pesticides have higher levels of cancer-fighting nutrients than produce treated with the chemicals, according to a study by University of California-Davis researchers.  And organic foods are environmentally-friendly, since organic farming promotes the use of renewable resources, as well as soil and water conservation.

One of the best reasons for eating organically-grown and organically-raised whole foods is that it simply tastes better than conventional, chemical-laden, processed foods.

Empower your family by making the conscious choice of providing whole foods free from chemicals, pesticides, growth hormones.  The benefit will be your family's good health and well-being.

Beware of These Foods and Products

Eating organic whole foods and drinking pure water can have profound effects on your family's health.  However, the USDA and agribusiness groups continue to emphasize that organic food is no healthier than conventional food.

This has proven not to be true in the case of pesticide contamination -- and the overuse of antibiotics in animals has contributed to the growing problem of human drug resistance.

Genetically-altered foods are also cause for concern.  To be classified as genetically engineered, genetically modified, or genetically altered, at least one gene from an organism is intentionally introduced into another organism, usually of a different species.

According to the Grocery Manufacturers of America, between 70 percent and 75 percent of all processed foods on the shelves of supermarkets contain genetically modified ingredients.  Genetically-altered crops and other foods are sold in stores without labels, even thought health risks still aren't known.  Under federal law, genetically-altered foods do not have to be labeled in grocery stores.

Very few studies have been conducted to determine whether genetically-altered foods are harmful to human health.  Genetic engineering may trigger allergies in people, create new and harmful toxins, lead to antibiotic resistance, and create unpredictable health effects, including the potentially pre-cancerous cell growth.

Irradiation damages the quality of food, produces toxic byproducts, is an environmental hazard, and doesn't solve the problem of providing clean, sustainable food.

Food additives, such as sodium nitrite, saccharin, aspartame, sucralose, caffeine, olestra, acesulfame K, and artificial coloring, are also a cause for concern and have been linked to mental and behavioral problems.

The consumption of sugar contributes to  deteriorating dental health, digestive problems, drug and alcohol addiction, and mental disorders.  There’s no doubt that Americans are addicted to sugar.  We consume an average of 150 lbs. per person per year.

Cows' milk and dairy products are not nature's perfect food, although the powerful dairy industry would make you believe it is so.

Dairy products are contaminated with viruses and bacteria (including bovine leukemia, bovine tuberculosis and cow immunodeficiency virus) and frequently with pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, and dioxin.  The consumption of dairy products is linked to allergies, constipation, obesity, heart disease, cancer, and osteoporosis.

Diet, Behavior, and Health

We know that good nutrition is linked to good health.  But, did you know that for virtually every major mental illness, studies exist showing that there are significant nutritional influences?

Behavioral problems in children and teens are quite often due to adverse reactions to food and, more often than not, to a lack in certain nutrients.   Researchers believe that children who have a poor diet are more likely to become aggressive and anti-social, as nutritional deficiencies and imbalances can impair brain function.  This sets the stage for delinquent and criminal behavior.

Attentional disorders (ADD/ADHD) have been linked to allergies to food additives, preservatives, chemicals, or inhalants.
